What do I want to eat?
This was the question that was on my mind almost 24/7. Then something fun happened that required I keep an eating journal. This blog was created to be a place to log my daily entries. I know, I know...why would anyone want to post an eating journal? Not to mention, who one earth would want to read an eating journal? I don't know - all I do know, is that I need to keep one to help me eat more responsibly.
The following was recorded on Tuesday April 22, 2008.
Last Friday night Stephen was on a campout with the Young Men so Sonnet and I were out and about together. We decided on a double feature – one movie @ the plaza and another @ Edwards. We had a little time between show times so we wandered around the shops @ Edwards. Russo’s Books looked good so we stopped in for a browse. The first book I picked up had us laughing out loud so we decided to get it. It is called Neris and India’s Idiot-Proof Diet. The authors are India Knight and Neris Thomas. The next two days we were mesmerized and took turns reading out to each other. The authors, India & Neris, became our new best friends and this diet adventure is a result of our time together with them through the printed word.
'How It All Began' is where I have posted the first two months journal. There after the most recent post will contain the most current week. I will say this, as I look back through it I realize what started out as just an accountability tool, has evolved into something much, much more meaningful for me.

Sleepless
Wednesday August 6, 2008 Phase Two Day 107:
It is Wednesday morning but it has been one continuous day for me. Here is how it is. Yesterday afternoon I got home from work and went straight to the computer to do some emails. Renee’s daughter Alexis came by to be fitted for the bridesmaid dress she asked me to make. Before I knew it, it was time for Becky Gennier’s baby shower. I ate some almonds, strawberries, melon and blueberries at the shower. I also had some cake & ice cream there. When I got home I started Alexis’ dress. It was a big sewing project in that the pattern required altering. Before cutting into the fabric I decided to make a mock up dress out of scraps. I started creating a pattern about 11:00. At 5:00am I was finally finished with the mock dress. During the night I ate a chocolate bar and a granola bar.
I laid down for 30 minutes before it was time to get up to meet my friends for walking. I really wanted to walk with my friends and get the day started with exercise. Right after my walk I went to Renee’s house to try the mock up on Alexis. Boy am I glad I experimented first. It defiantly needed some tweaking. Even though I did not have much sleep I needed to keep going. Now I am home and am making the necessary adjustments to the pattern. I made some bacon and eggs to give me a boost. I feel very tired but have decided to go ahead and at least cut out the dress. Also today I must call all the girls that ordered from the Bishops storehouse and have them drop off their checks. Tomorrow morning I go the Fresno to get the orders. I have a lunch date with the girls at the office for Karrie’s birthday. Later the missionaries are coming for dinner. What a day I have ahead. I am very tired but if I can just make some progress on the dress I will feel better.
Well, I made it through. Lunch was nice – we went to the fish place and had fish tacos. It was a nice break from the sewing machine. After lunch it was back to work.. The dress progressed slowly. Sonnet helped call ward sisters and round up the checks for the storehouse run. She also helped Stephen get dinner together and ready when the missionaries came. I had two meat and veggie shishkabobbs and a fruit cup for dinner. Alexis came over about 8:30. We had ’Sense & Sensibility’ going on the TV while I put the finishing touches and alterations on the dress. Finally about 10:30 the dress was done and she was leaving. I had been awake over 40 hours. Stephen & I went up to bed. I remember saying prayers with him but nothing after that. I was out.
Thursday August 7, 2008 Phase Two Day 108:
My cell phone went off at 10:30. I was awakened to Tiffany’s voice. We had a nice visit for over an hour. After that, I called Stephen. Blake called while we were on the phone with a blog question. What a little chatting family we are! Finally, around noon I had a bowl of fresh berries. Mid afternoon, I ate a granola bar. Tonight I want to have something light as well. Maybe tuna & crackers and a smoothie. At 5:30 Sonnet & I have our weight class – yea, I have missed being active the last couple of days.
It is time to go to class so I am having another bowl of berries just to have something in my stomach. Weight lift class was hard today – good but hard. At home, I did have tuna and crackers. Sonnet made sugar free pudding cups as a treat. Over all a good and light day.
Friday August 8, 2008 Phase Two Day 109:
What a day! Sonnet slept over and went walking with my friends this morning. We hurried home and ate eggs, bacon and cantaloupe before leaving for the Fresno Bishops storehouse. It was my turn to pick up the ward food orders from the storehouse. The trailer was packed to the limit. At 11:00, we started home and felt kind of hungry. There was no place to stop really; besides, I had a 1:00 appointment at my office in Bakersfield and did not have time to stop at a restaurant. So, I pulled into a gas station and we each got some water, nuts and cheese. That tided me over and through my meeting. When Stephen came home, we decided to take in a couple movies for date night. I suggested dinner at Red Robin to start us off. They serve a delicious Fiesta salad. It was very satisfying. I planned to have an ice cream treat in between shows but it turned out there was not enough time. No problem, I could always get the ice cream after the second movie. On the way out of the second, I decided not to get anything. I am so glad I changed my mind. I should not have been thinking of dessert in the first place. This is the trouble with me and vacations – I get in the mindset of anything goes. Then it becomes easy to broaden that reasoning to include having dessert because it is luncheon with friends, or getting a treat because it is date night, or any other number of ‘occasions’.
Saturday August 9, 2008 Phase Two Day 110:
OK, up and out early for a Saturday. I had sisters from the ward coming by at 8:00 to pick up their food storage items, and I needed to run to the store before they came. It was all done by 9:30. Phew! I went in and had some cantaloupe. I told Sonnet I felt heavy and puffy. I have been having too many treats I guess although the last couple of days have been good. I know I need to drink more water. Perhaps I will have to go back to filling water bottles at night, leaving them on the counter and making sure I down them all before going to bed. It worked well.
After breakfast, Sonnet brought all her clothes over that did not fit anymore. I have at least a dozen shirts to alter and about seven pairs of pants. I guess it is back to the sewing machine for me. Stephen was sorting through camping gear so I made him a grilled cheese sandwich and served it with cottage cheese and tomatoes. I only ate a piece of cheese while cooking. After a run to the store, I was hungry. Putting away the groceries I ate a handful of almonds, two pieces of dark chocolate, one bite of chicken, then a granola bar.
Sonnet made an interesting observation; she said she thinks I eat too many crackers. I do have them about every day. The crackers combined with the granola bars could be over graining me. She was reminding me, that when wheat is introduced back into the diet it is to be eaten sparingly, only a few times a week. OK, I just read and it does say to have bread (in my case crackers) only two times a week. It also cautions to, “Watch yourself like a hawk”. I have not been watching myself let alone like a hawk. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I feel a little heavy and puffy? My crackers are not as bad as bread but I do need to cut back. I will make a goal of four times a week. In addition, the days I have crackers I cannot have a granola bar. I can live with that.
I am thinking of having chicken lettuce wraps tonight – maybe chicken, onion and avocado. Sounds good. I need also remember to make sure I am eating leafy greens every day.
Sunday August 10, 2008 Phase Two Day 111:
I am being so good I cannot believe how good I am being! Last night before sleep, Stephen massaged a sore shoulder and neck. It was heavenly – so relaxing not to mention pain relieving. I fell right to sleep and did not wake the entire night. This morning I felt great. For breakfast, I had cantaloupe. After church Cheyenne came over and we had tuna lettuce wraps and peach smoothies. The tuna had green onion and celery diced up in it. I also had pickles and cheddar cheese on the table for the wraps. Light and tasty. We chatted and caught up for a couple of hours. It is now 5:15 and I have just had a granola bar. Up here at the computer I am making myself have a glass of water. Not sure what will be for dinner – something little. Sonnet & I will take a stroll when the sun goes down.
Monday August 11, 2008 Phase Two Day 112:
Today Stephen & I are off to Ontario. He has a workshop/training thing. I started my day walking with friends and eating a bowl of cantaloupe. It was so nice to putter around the house taking care of small loose ends. Stephen is coming home at noon to pick me up. I thought we would have mixed berries and egg salad sandwiches (lettuce wraps for me) before we leave. I made a delicious mix of eggs, celery, green onion and pickles. I love my little dicer/shredder/chopper tool. We picked it up at the fair a few years ago and I have used it almost daily since. It makes adding ingredients that require chopping so easy. It chops fast and very fine.
OK, we are off. Wish me luck!
