What do I want to eat?

This was the question that was on my mind almost 24/7. Then something fun happened that required I keep an eating journal. This blog was created to be a place to log my daily entries. I know, I know...why would anyone want to post an eating journal? Not to mention, who one earth would want to read an eating journal? I don't know - all I do know, is that I need to keep one to help me eat more responsibly.

The following was recorded on Tuesday April 22, 2008.
Last Friday night Stephen was on a campout with the Young Men so Sonnet and I were out and about together. We decided on a double feature – one movie @ the plaza and another @ Edwards. We had a little time between show times so we wandered around the shops @ Edwards. Russo’s Books looked good so we stopped in for a browse. The first book I picked up had us laughing out loud so we decided to get it. It is called Neris and India’s Idiot-Proof Diet. The authors are India Knight and Neris Thomas. The next two days we were mesmerized and took turns reading out to each other. The authors, India & Neris, became our new best friends and this diet adventure is a result of our time together with them through the printed word.

'How It All Began' is where I have posted the first two months journal. There after the most recent post will contain the most current week. I will say this, as I look back through it I realize what started out as just an accountability tool, has evolved into something much, much more meaningful for me.

What Goes Down, Must Come Up

Thursday August 14, 2008 Phase Two Day 115:
I am back from Ontario. I did OK but not great with regards to food choices. Mostly I ate delicious salads, eggs, fruit or chicken. The only snag was the same old problem as before when I wanted a specific treat, did not get it, then ate other things trying to pacify the desire. Does not work – always get the thing you want and be done with it. I ate a hot dog and some churro sticks instead of getting the Coldstone I really wanted. Finally, the next day we stopped for the ice cream. The good news is that they had a gym at the hotel as well as a pool. I worked out and swam laps. It was great exercise.

Back home, I weighed myself this morning. It is not an official weigh in but I am happy to report I was down a pound. Yea! I must keep going though. This morning I ate a slice of cantaloupe before step class. Then came home and had cottage cheese and cantaloupe. I worked long today – seven hours. For lunch, Wanda & I went to Los Hermonos, yum. I ordered a wonderful taco salad. Just lettuce with tomatoes, cheese a little guacamole, a few tortilla and chicken. It was drizzled with a very good cilantro dressing that was light and delicious. It was served in a flour tortilla shell but I did not eat it all. The bad news is that we stopped in at Rite-Aid for an ice cream on the way back to the office.

This is what I have observed: With the amount of exercise I do, I can eat treats quite often and hold my own. If I do not go crazy I can maintain alright. However, what usually happens is that after about a month I do go crazy and begin having treats every day, sometimes multiple times a day. I set my system up with a sugar addiction and crave carbs. I gain an uncomfortable amount of weight and suffer until I get to the point of revulsion and take action to loose the weight. This is very satisfying until, of course, I repeat the routine. What I like about the book way of eating is that it forces me to address this destructive cycle. If I keep my body free of the common deluge of sugar found in just about everything processed; I do, feel and look much better. It preaches basic good nutrition and common sense eating. This is not revelatory – or a new concept. It is just helpful for me to articulate it to remind myself of the sound practice of sugar purging. I have been excessively lax.

Sonnet & I went to weight lift class this afternoon then I came home and had two eggs and bacon. I enjoyed swimming earlier this week so much, I think I will add it to the Thursday afternoon workout by jumping in the pool right after the weight class. About 20 minutes of laps will be good.

Friday August 15, 2008 Phase Two Day 116:
Started the day by walking with friend – not friends. Rinez & I were the only ones. This might be the case all next week also. Taunie, Gaye & Jami will be in Utah. We’ll see if Shannon comes or not. Anyway, the day went OK. I ate cantaloupe & cottage cheese for breakfast. Went into the office for my official first day back. Wanda & I went back to Los Hermanos for lunch. Another Taco salad for me. This time we skipped the trip to Rite-Aid for ice cream. Are you proud of me? Well, don’t be too proud. Back at the office they had ice cream in the frig and I had some.

For dinner we were scheduled to attend Shannon Rock’s 50 surprise B-day party. Actually, his wife was mistaken and it turned out to be his 49th b-day; but what the heck – we were all already there so we partied on. I did pretty well. I ate chicken, broccoli salad, a little potato salad and a small helping of Jello. I had a spoonful of Key-Lime pie and a sliver of Chocolate cake. Not too bad.

Saturday August 16, 2008 Phase Two Day 117:
My day begins with Stephen & I gathering with others at the Bunting house for receive our maps for precinct walking in favor of Proposition 8. We ate cottage cheese and pears before we left. Stephen is heading out to Arvin to canvas the assigned neighborhoods. He dropped me back home to hit the bank and shop for a baby shower I have this morning. I will go out to Arvin this afternoon. Yea, I am only free to work when it will be over 100 degrees! Oh, well.

The shower was very nice. Jocelyn was there, and as a stealth reader of this blog, will know if I lie and say I was reasonable about my servings. It was all so yummy I have to admit I had plenty! Stephanie served a couple things I really liked. The first were wontons with yogurt & coolwhip on them. I guess you can buy wonton pastry in the deli section. She showed me the package and it looks like a package of sliced cheese. Take one square and press it lightly into one compartment of a mini muffin pan. Bake to create the shell. Then, fill with creamy filling and serve chilled. She has also used meat fillings, which would be delicious. Speaking of delicious, the other thing I gobbled up was her chicken mix on crackers. The mixture had canned chicken, green onions, carrots and some seasonings. It was very tasty. I could serve it in lettuce wraps when eating lean or on my wheat crackers. It would also be a nice finger dish served in wonton mini cups.

Tonight Blake & Sara are coming into town so I will need to have something ready to eat. I would love to have a salad of some kind. Perhaps Oriental chicken salad, or the old stand-by, taco salad. I might try to get the recipe for that broccoli salad we had last night at the Ricks – it was exceptionally good.

The kids arrived and we ended up with taco salad & a bowl of fresh fruit. While the guys were going through their hiking equipment, Sonnet, Sara & I took our dinners upstairs and stole off to watch ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner”. This has to be my favorite movie of all time. I love the family dynamics and thought processes. I love the actors, personalities and emotional energy of each character. It was a delightful evening.

Sunday August 17, 2008 Phase Two Day 118:
Welcome, Welcome, Sabbath Morning…..I love Sundays. Poor Stephen stayed up until after midnight then got up with the alarm at 5:15. He is off to meetings. I got up at 7:30 and fixed eggs, bacon, toast and cantaloupes for the kids. I ate a few pieces of cantaloupe. Choir is singing today and I have invited Sara & Blake to sing with us. How wonderful is that!

The choir sounded glorious. After church we came home and snacked on fruit. Sara & I made sugar free pudding parfaits for dessert at dinner. Of course we had to polish off the leftover pudding. I also had a granola bar. Later for dinner, I served some tri-tip, chicken, green beans, potatoes, salad and corn. I was good and only had the meat and green beans. I should have had some salad but it just wasn’t appealing. I ate my parfait. I have not had anything else today and I had better keep it that way. I need a serious attitude adjustment. I told Sonnet I was going to read the first week of phase one again to remind myself of sugar purging.

With Stephen gone backpacking this week, I will be on my own. In many ways it could be a very good and productive week. Without a husband at home to consider; my time, schedule and menu will truly be my own. For example, I can work on the computer till all hours - great. Although they say the computer saves time, I have found there is nothing quick about the computer. Maybe it is just me, but when I sit down to work on a project I can get hung up for hours before I even realize it. I have a lot of church work to do in preparation of the stake social and Christmas program. It will be nice to be far ahead of the game when my busy fall schedule begins to pick up. In addition, I can work long hours at the office on projects that need to get up and running with the beginning of school. Hours I bank now will come in handy when I want to vacation later.

Also, I want to start swimming at the gym. I am planning to do a few laps following the weight classes on Tuesday & Thursday. Sonnet reminded me that I can go anytime. I guess I do not think about going to the gym except when I have a class. She suggested I take my suit with me and stop in after work. That sounds good. Hopefully I can get started this week.

Monday August 18, 2008 Phase Two Day 119:
I got up early, ate a slice of cantaloupe and went walking with Rinez. We meet ant the church and it was exciting to see all the students show up for the first day of seminary. The guys were scheduled to meet at our house at 9:30. By 10:45 they finally got on the road. I dished up bacon, eggs and a big croissant to fuel them up. I had eggs and some fruit. Stephen’s pack was by far the heaviest. It dressed out at 69 pounds.

I hope he’ll be OK, he is not as young as he used to be. I saw Justin sneak a big rock into Blake’s pack. Boys! – What cha gonna do! I know Stephen is very excited.

Today I will make some cabbage oriental chicken salad. I think that will be a good thing to take to work for lunch. I also have nectarines…….OK, it is 2:30 now and I haven’t made the salad. I need to pick up some chicken at the store. As I was saying earlier about the time warp a computer creates; I have been blogging this morning and now all the sudden it is afternoon. Actually, I got a late start this morning because of the boys leaving. Also, we had a house guest and she didn’t leave until about 1:00.

This morning in addition to the eggs and piece of bacon, I have had a nectarine, yogurt and crackers with turkey & cheese. I am full right now. I am going to get ready and go into the office. I’m taking my suit and if the gym is not too busy I would like to get in a swim tonight.

About 5:30 I called Sonnet to see if she would like to meet me for a salad dinner somewhere. We landed at the Hungry Hunter, which we both agreed we would not go back to for salads. They do not even advertize salads on the menu. When I asked our server she explained the Hungry Hunter does not have salads, however we could have something called a tableside salad. We tried it. Our waitress came to our table with a bowl of lettuce and a selection of toppings. I had, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese sunflower seeds and green onions. I also ordered a chicken breast. Never again – I mean it was OK, but I do not like to pay high prices for OK. True to my word, I went to the gym and swam. It felt wonderful. It really wears me out.

Back home it is very quiet. I put in t load of laundry and made the oriental salad for tomorrow. It is weigh in day tomorrow – dun da dun dun. We shall see.

Tuesday August 19, 2008 Phase Two Day 120:
Woke up and went to step class. I had a slice of cantaloupe on the way. When I got home Sonnet was there fixing spam and eggs – yum. We weighed - she was the same and I was up a pound. We both were not surprised. The last few weeks have been loose for both of us. Now that school has started though, we will settle down into a normal routine.

For lunch I had some Oriental salad and a nectarine. I worked seven hours today and now it is time for weight class…….Class was good today but I am pooped. I think the late night and early morning catching up with me. Sonnet came over after class and we had more salad for dinner. I had a few crackers with it. It is nice to relax. Tonight I am getting to bed early for sure!
